A little bit of club history - 1964 season

The following season reviews for 1964 originally appeared in the company magazine - "NU News".

Men's Rowing Review

Pots Galore! the ambition of every oarsman has been adequately realised by the club which finished the season with a record breaking 27 event wins to its credit. Our success is principally attributable to the Senior IV who contributed 17 of these.

This celebrated quartet has won the Senior IV's event at many of England's top Regattas and the extent of their success culminated in their being being invited by the British Selectors to row in the ARA Trials for the European Games.

The remainder of the club's oarsmen, inspired by such a fine example, accumulated 10 cups, 5 of which were won by Brian Baker, whose incredibly smooth sculling was well rewarded.

Apart from the obvious successes one pleasing feature of this year's rowing has been that every oarsman who started at the beginning of the season finished by winning an event; an excellent precedent for next year.

Women's Rowing Review

The ladies Rowing Club this year had an extremely successful season, winning 8 events at 10 regattas.

The Junior Senior Crew (Bow, M Varney: 2, C Dye: 3, P Hood: Stroke, B Smith: cox, S Walker) won at Barnes and Mortlake Regatta, Whitlingham Week, Huntingdon, Bedford Ladies and Norwich Regatta. At this stage we had a change in the crew and would like to thank Pamela Pearce very much for sportingly stepping in at "3" position at such short notice. We then went on to win at Sudbury Regatta: this crew also competed in the Serpentine Regatta in which we came 3rd to Weybridge and Stuart.

The Ladies Novice IV gained their Junior status at Barnes and Mortlake with a crew of Bow, I Monkman: 2, J Platten: 3, F Dalton: Stroke, G Cook: cox, M Huggins. they won again at the end of the season at St. Ives Regatta in the Ladies Non-status event with a changed crew of Bow, S Appleton: 2, H Sparkes: 3, I Monkman: Stroke, G Cook: cox, M Huggins.

On Thursday 20 August the Rowing Club held a buffet at the Royal Hotel to celebrate what has been one of the most successful seasons the club has ever had.
